Decoding Lord Huron: Small Yet Mighty

A coming of age story!

You might not have ever heard of the little Lord Huron collection called Mighty. That is why I am writing about it. Mighty is the very beginning of Lord Huron. They are a band I thoroughly enjoy. Their storytelling abilities are second only to their smooth soulful folk sounds. While Mighty is only four songs, there is a lot to love about this little package.

You can watch and listen to the videos below as I explain what I think they are about. The total length of these four songs is almost exactly twenty minutes and they are all worth a listen. Let’s start with the title track “Mighty.” Not very many people have seen this video! I believe this group of songs is mostly the work of lead singer Ben Schneider. These are the songs that got him the “traction” he needed to bring his band together. Feel free to correct me if I am mistaken.

This “Mighty” video starts out with a body of water. This is a common idea that you will hear me repeat in the future. Lord Huron talks about water in a lot of their videos. This makes sense. The band is named after a body of water.

In this video, we see a military vessel that gets blown up at the beginning. Next, it is some fancy ladies dancing to this tribal beat. We see some wild animals with an emphasis on the “wild.” A little cheetah cub plays with a cobra and some other stuff happens. We see a moon and a bird. Some dolphins lead us towards the ship again. Our cheetah has grown up and he is fast.

In the next scene, we take a trip into a psychedelic clamshell. I believe this is a metaphor. The region that Lord Huron is named after was home to many indigenous tribes. The clamshell and the bird were both major symbols of a lot of those tribes. Some tribes even include the clamshell in their creation story. This is where they believe the world began. I am not sure if this is what Ben intended. It sure does fit the rest of the stories he tells.
